[Let the] Art Speak

What made the 21 selected pieces stand out, especially since I had two of my own chosen for this exhibition?

"At its heart, [Let the] Art Speak asks: What does art become when we release it from labels? Second Echo Ensemble’s artists practising radical equity in all its textures have curated this exhibition through a blind process. No names. No bios.  Just bold, thought-provoking artworks that demand presence before presumed meaning. This model flips the script on traditional art systems, supporting SEE’s long-held belief that art should be encountered directly, without filter or pre-judgment—a space for encounter, curiosity, dialogue, and deep reflection. [Let the] Art Speak unfolds SEE’s belief that art can be radically equitable and transformative—that meaning emerges in the shared interplay between artwork and audience, not behind names, status or expectation. It’s visual art reimagined through a lens of inclusion, access, curiosity, and power reversal. The project invites artists and audiences alike to reconsider how art is valued, who gets heard, and what it means to truly be present with work that speaks without biography."

The Book of Q

The Book of Q - a collaborative artist's book that emerged from a trilogy of handmade bookmaking workshops led by Raymond Arnold and Helena Demczuk at Press in Queenstown.

In the winter of 2025, a remarkable series of prints was created during the "Book of Queenstown" workshops, featuring contributions from artists across the state. This innovative project sought to explore experimental, "bookish" formats that capture the essence of the local landscape, moving away from traditional bound volumes. 

The Book of Q is a collaborative concertina (accordion-style) artist's book that showcases the collective works of these talented artists. This completed book was proudly exhibited at the Unconformity Festival in Queenstown. Following the production of the handmade Book of Q, a limited-edition print run of around 50 copies was produced, which sold out rapidly upon its release.

My Contribution towards the Book of Q-

I have always been captivated by the crucial role women have played throughout history, often overshadowed by the dominant narrative of 'His Story.' During my research for the book, I decided to focus on the nurses and miners' wives from 1900 to 1945. It quickly became clear that the local newspaper predominantly featured stories about miners, with little regard for women—except for occasional mentions of their outfits at local dances. Picture a history book about Queenstown where miners take center stage, and both the authors and publishers are mainly men. Yet, it was the women who served as the vital thread that wove families together. They crafted and shaped the narrative, quietly supporting their partners, managing households, and making significant contributions to the community's well-being. The stories of these women are embedded in the very landscape of Queenstown, waiting to be acknowledged.
