“What a beauty!” her first owner exclaimed, captivated by the pristine paint, alluring curves, supple leather seats, and gleaming chrome accents. She may have boasted luxury features such as a cigarette lighter, radio, and a spacious glovebox.

Now abandoned, this vintage gem has found a different kind of beauty—one that age and passage of time bestow. Mirroring the colours and textures of her final caretaker, Mother Nature, she now weeps rust as she gradually returns to the earth.

Bushfires are a defining characteristic of the Australian landscape. In light of the devastating bushfires that Tasmania has endured in recent years, I seek to explore the resilience of this landscape in the face of natural disasters like fire through my art. The iconic eucalyptus leaf embodies a striking duality: it is both a source of nourishment and a trigger for flames. However, following the fire, regeneration takes place. There is nothing quite as uplifting as witnessing vibrant new green shoots emerging alongside the charred trunks of trees in the aftermath of a bushfire.

The Day the Mountain Turned Black  2026

I was just ten years old during the bushfire of 1967, and the vivid memories of chimney stacks and twisted roofing iron still linger. The landscape was left blackened, charred, and distorted by the relentless flames.

Mt Wellington/kunanyi bore the brunt of the inferno, transforming from lush green to stark black in a single day. In the searing heat,  the eucalyptus trees wept deep blue tears as the gases evaporated from their leaves.

These trees symbolise resilience; after a fire, they regenerate and thrive, and the mountain once again dons its cloak of green.
